Wetland Birds Survey January 2013

Paul Bingham, WeBS Volunteer, came to do the monthly count and the results are in the table below. Whilst the focus is on Wetland Birds, other birds are also noted and, with several other people accompanying the walk around, the species tally grew!

Two Lesser Redpolls (more common than the Common Redpoll) were seen down by Facilities’ Block 3 – the first time they had been recorded on the Marina. These little finches – not much bigger than a blue tit – have a particular liking for Birch Trees, so David Boddy’s mixed plantings are having the desired effect of attracting a wide species variety.

The photograph of the Lesser Redpoll was taken on the Saturday by Richard Triggs, a moorer and wonderful photographer. He has created a feeding station on the grassy island by his boat and there is a Triggs Gallery on this website which gives a little taste of the superb relationship developing between the Marina’s wildlife and his camera lens.
