Bat Surveys and Sonograms

Steve and Alan Roe have continued to monitor the marina’s foraging bat species. On their second survey, they added Leisler’s and the Brown Long-Eared Bat to the tally.

The bats don’t roost here, they just come to feed but they can come to grief. This Daubenton’s bat (photograph by Alan Roe) was grounded and sustained a cat injury. Daubtenton’s are specialist water feeders, ‘fishing’ insects from the water surface. They follow the canal and sweep into the Marina under the bridge, low across the water, picking up insects with their feet.

The sonogram sequence (click to see three-page .pdf) shows how the different species leave different sonograms.
