Butterfly Survey 2011
One of the days of the 2011 national Big Butterfly Count fell on a warm summer Sunday in July so we were out counting and logging. This yielded the following results: Brimstone (1), Large White (5), Small White (1), Green-veined White (2), Purple Hairstreak (2), Common Blue (4), Holly Blue (1), Red Admiral (3), Small Tortoiseshell (3), Peacock (4), Comma (2), Speckled Wood (2), Gatekeeper (40), Meadow Brown (6).
The Purple Hairstreak was a surprise – they are normally only found towards the tops of oak trees. But there was a bit of a wind and it had come down to sit about on the oak saplings.
